Volunteer Complementary Therapist

Location: Skanda Vale Hospice, Saron, Llandysul, SA44 5DY.

Hours: 10 hours per month, with flexibility to accommodate additional hours as needed.

Supported by: Spiritual Care and Wellbeing Lead.


In this role, you will provide holistic therapies designed to enhance well-being, reduce stress, and alleviate symptoms associated with life-limiting illnesses. Working within a compassionate multidisciplinary team, you will support our patients and their families, contributing to a calming and supportive care environment.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Therapeutic Treatments: Offer complementary therapy such as massage, aromatherapy, and reflexology, tailored to meet the individual needs and preferences of our patients.
  • Consultation: Conduct initial consultations to understand patient preferences, medical history, and any contraindications for treatment.
  • Therapeutic Environment: Create a safe, calm, and supportive space for therapy sessions, ensuring patients feel relaxed and comfortable throughout their treatments.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and confidential records of therapy sessions, including patient assessments, treatment plans, and any relevant observations or outcomes.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with patients, their families, and other members of the multidisciplinary team, providing updates on patient progress and addressing any concerns or feedback.
  • Professional Development: Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge.
  • Health and Safety: Adhere to health and safety protocols and infection control measures, ensuring a safe and hygienic environment for therapy sessions.
  • Ethical and Professional Conduct: Conduct yourself with professionalism, integrity, and compassion at all times, upholding the values and ethos of the hospice.

Qualifications & experience:

  • Accredited qualification in complementary therapy (e.g., massage therapy, aromatherapy, reflexology, Reiki).
  • Membership or registration with a recognised professional body relevant to your therapy discipline.
  • Previous experience providing complementary therapy treatments, preferably in a palliative care or hospice setting.
  • Understanding of the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of palliative care.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with patients and their families.
  • Empathy, compassion, and a non-judgmental approach to patient care.

Training & support:

We provide comprehensive training and ongoing support to ensure our Volunteer Complementary Therapists feel confident and capable in their roles.
