day hospice
A space to relax and be yourself
Day hospice is a space to share experiences, have fun and find mutual support. We’ll put you and your needs first rather than make you fit in with ‘our way’ of doing things. You may or may not want to talk about your situation. No problem. We are here to support you in any way you need.
what to expect AT DAY HOSPICE CARE
- A beautiful day room to spend time with others and quiet spaces to rest and relax.
- Delicious home-cooked meals and snacks to suit your dietary requirements.
- Complementary therapies, including reflexology, acupuncture and massage.
- Assisted bathing facilities with a hydraulic bath, ceiling hoist and chair lift.
- Beautiful gardens, with countryside views.
- Art and craft activities.

- Support with writing an Advance Care Plan should you wish.
It’s renewed my faith in human nature. It really has. I mean, I was getting to be very sceptical about the human race, but I’ve discovered here a vein of humanity that is very, very special.

How long can I use day hospice?
Following your initial assessment, you may attend day hospice for eight sessions – after that, we will look again to ensure we are meeting your needs. For some patients, this assessment may lead to a referral to another hospice service, or we may agree to another eight sessions.
At this stage, it may be that our Remote Companion Service will be more suitable to your needs, or you may be discharged from Skanda Vale Hospice for the time being. If at any point your circumstances and needs change, however, you need only pick up the phone to be reassessed for returning.
Making a referral
We welcome referrals from adults with life-limiting conditions and palliative care needs.
Anyone can make a referral – be they a patient, friend, family member or healthcare professional.
There’s no catchment area: places are offered according to need, not postcode.
All of our hospice day services are offered completely free of charge.

A few days at the hospice: Paula’s perspective
In this short video, Paula shares her experience of care at Skanda Vale Hospice, describing mornings where you can wake when you want, beautiful gardens to walk through, and evenings spent on the balcony watching birds.
She explains how care is shaped around what each person wants to do that day—from having a bath to enjoying meals together—comparing the experience to ‘better than a five-star hotel.’
